Participatory Journalism can be also known as “Citizen Journalism”. The easiest way to understand is to think of it as non-journalists doing journalism. The public actively participates in gathering information, creating, and distributing news to its communities. Involving citizen witness accounts, opinions, and their own experiences throughout the creation process. The medium used is usually through online platforms or generally social media. The quality of news can differ depending on the published material, whether it be text posts, photos, or videos.
This method of journalism is a way to democratize news and give a voice to the voiceless, especially topics that are usually not covered by the bigger media productions. With these ideas in mind, Participatory Journalism can be a powerful tool for bridging the gap between traditional journalism and community-powered engagement with the public.
On the contrary, the history of Participatory Journalism is far from short. Dating back to the earlier days of printed media. Local newspapers often relied from community members contributing to gather news and stories from other people. A prominent rise of Citizen Journalism happened because it was used to document social movements protest events, such as the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Most notably here in the Philippines, it was used in the People’s Power Revolution in 1986.
In the present, the rise of technology has become powerful enough to document all of these events. From opinions shared online on forums, to information spreading like wildfire due to the advent of social media.
